Reid Beat Me to the Punch – UPDATED

Reid Greven, our associate Music Director, beat me to the punch and filmed a little video about our guitar isolation boxes this afternoon with me. The video is below, but you can also find out a little more over at his blog.

UPDATE: Here’s the video of the fan.

  • I have 3 main questions to run by ya.

How does the size of the box effect the tone? Do you think it would be better to make them a little larger if I have the room? Are you getting any boxy reverb off the surface that the amp sits on?

This is funny, I actually met with a cabinet maker to build me some boxes earlier today. But seeing yours I got some new ideas.

Wow, that is really cool, thanks for the detailed explanation, really interesting.

  • I was wondering about heat dissipation. Are there fans or ventilation of any sort? Or does the heat not affect the amps so much?

    Thanks for posting this Dave!

  • I haven’t really been bothered by them sounding boxy. There is a lot of acoustic treatment in there, and they’re quite dead. The guitarists also get their amps really loud so any reflected sound is going to be way below the direct signal we get with the mics practically up on the grill.

I think making the boxes bigger is better. These were built by Chris Briley and were sort of phase 1 of his grand scheme. He redesigned them when he moved up to Browns Bridge, and they are bigger up there and at Buckhead. Our boxes are hard to get a 4×10 or 4×12 cabinet; we usually lie them down on their back, propping one end up to get a cable underneath. The BBCC and BC ones are not stacked and big enough to put just about anything inside.

  • There is a small exhaust fan built into the boxes for heat dissipation; the footage ended up on the cutting room floor.

Something we didn’t look at in the video is there are 1/4″ connectors so that a guitarist can place his amp head on stage if desired.

  • Those are awesome Dave! I see some guitar amp isolation boxes in our future. By the way, good job on the video. You could be on the Discovery channel or something.

  • Hey Dave, a couple months ago you blogged about using the X3’s live. Did that stick or over time did you go back to using the cabs and boxes?

  • The X3’s are still here and becoming more and more ubiquitous. We had one in use for Drive, and it was getting a lot of positive feedback.

Thanks for the great info Dave. I’m working on convincing our worship pastor we need to do this to cut down our stage volume, but it is proving to be an uphill struggle. Any chance we could see some dimensions on the newly designed ones in place at BBCC? I’m able to build this stuff, no problem. But I would appreciate help on what you guys have decided is an adequate size for the box. Thanks again for the helpful info!

  • Thanks for posting these here. I have been working on a design for a while now. The videos really help me to see new ideas.
