Listen To This: EQ’ing Toms

One of the most common things I get asked at workshops and while consulting is to demonstrate how to EQ a tom so I’m trying something new today. I created a short video showing my approach. You can check the video out embedded below. I suggest viewing this in HD to get the higher sound quality.

If you can’t see the embed for some reason, you can click HERE to go right to the video over at YouTube.

I’d appreciate it if you could let me know what you think of the video. Does it help? Should I make more videos like these? The comments are open below.

The embedded video works, but the direct link is wrong. It should be https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bePHgCNKDZU

Thank you for the video. It was great and really helped a lot.

  • Absolutely would like to see more videos from you.
Excellent way of ‘searching’ for that mysterious tom sound.
    This helped me!

  • Would like to get your take on Overheads after watching the CLA Slate VMR where he adds a good amount of low end to the Overheads and knowing what a fan you are of CLA.

It’s an interesting approach, but not necessarily one I’m going to take up. It’s the kind of thing that really would depend on the context of the situation, and not all overheads are going to have usable LF. For example, if the two mics aren’t phase aligned, any phase issues will exhibit most in the LF.

To me, the bigger theme with him is something I’ve been doing a long time, and that’s using all your mics to contribute to “the sound.” So the snare sound isn’t just the close mic; it’s the top and bottom and samples and overheads and room mics. I don’t think I realized I’d been doing that until I switched to under-mic’ing cymbals for a bit. The cymbals were cool, but I lost a bit in my snare sound so I went back to using my overhead. Everything adds up. Pure isolation of things isn’t a big goal for me unless I really need it.

  • Great Post Dave!

I am going to share this with the teams at my church!

Great video! Would love to watch more of these from you! Drum sounds are always fun. Would love to watch you layer on compressor, gate, and FX to this and work your way around the rest of the kit
